About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the privilege tax bond actually guarantees

Under the City of Aurora's food and beverage tax ordinance (Aurora City Code Chapter 44, Article VII), a business selling taxable food, beverages, or alcoholic liquor must register for a Certificate of Registration and post a bond with the Revenue and Collection Division. The bond is a tax-remittance guarantee: it backs the registrant's promise to collect and actually pay over the privilege tax it owes the City.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Aurora (the obligee), which can recover against the bond if a registrant fails to remit tax it collected. It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety.

The City sets the required amount at the lower of three months' estimated tax liability or $20,000, with a floor of $2,000 for liquor license holders and $500 for every other registrant. Aurora tells you the exact figure when it processes your Certificate of Registration application — enter that number and your premium is priced from a $100 minimum.
