About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the promoter bond actually guarantees

Florida regulates boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts through the Florida Athletic Commission under Chapter 548. Before a promoter is licensed or an event permit issues, the promoter must file a surety bond under F.S. 548.014 — a guarantee that the promoter performs the obligations the chapter imposes.

The bond is conditioned on the promoter's faithful performance: accounting for and paying all money and taxes due the commission on time, and fulfilling contracts with other licensees (fighters, matchmakers, officials). The amount is set by the commission at a reasonable figure of at least $15,000, and a promoter may post cash or a certified check in lieu of a bond.

It is not insurance for you. If a fighter goes unpaid, a contract is broken, or commission fees go unremitted, the harmed party can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.

F.S. 548.014 (Florida Athletic Commission)Florida Statutes 548.014 requires a promoter to file a surety bond with the Florida Athletic Commission before a license is issued or renewed and before an event permit issues, in a reasonable amount set by the commission of at least $15,000. The bond is conditioned on faithful performance of the promoter's obligations under Chapter 548 and the fulfillment of contracts with other licensees. Cash or a certified check may be deposited in lieu of a bond. Confirm your amount with the commission.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Florida boxing promoter bond?Premiums are 1% of the bond amount. The bond amount itself is set by the Florida Athletic Commission at no less than $15,000. Enter the figure the commission set and your exact price appears at the application.
Why does Florida require it?Under F.S. 548.014, it backs the promoter's obligations — paying fighters and other licensees, fulfilling contracts, and remitting money and taxes due the commission. A harmed fighter, official, or the commission can recover against the bond.
Can I post cash instead?Yes — the statute lets a promoter deposit cash or a certified check in an equivalent amount in lieu of a surety bond. Most promoters use a bond instead, paying a premium from $150 rather than tying up the full amount in cash.
Is there a credit check? At the standard amounts the application collects no credit information, and most applicants approve instantly. Larger bond amounts add a credit-consent step on the form. If a check does run on a larger bond amount, it's a soft pull only — never a hard inquiry, and it never touches your score.
Does this cover MMA and kickboxing too?Yes. The Florida Athletic Commission regulates boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts under Chapter 548, and the same promoter bond requirement applies across those disciplines.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
