About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Alabama licenses portable restroom operators through the Onsite Wastewater Board (AOWB). Most operators post the $15,000 basic-license bond, but some license classifications carry the higher $30,000 amount — this page is that bond. Confirm which figure your license requires on your AOWB application.

The bond is a public-protection guarantee that you service, pump, and dispose of portable restroom waste in line with the Board's law and rules. It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Alabama for the benefit of the public (the obligee).

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of the license, so we track it and notify you ahead of the Board's December 31 renewal deadline.

Code of Ala. § 34-21A-16 (AOWB)The Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board is established under Code of Ala. 1975, § 34-21A, and § 34-21A-16 conditions a licensee on a surety bond. By Board rule (AOWB Administrative Code Chapter 628-X-3), the bond amount varies by license classification — $15,000 for basic-level and $30,000 for advanced-level licensees. Renewed with the license by December 31 each year. Confirm the amount on your application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

Which portable restroom bond do I need, $15,000 or $30,000? +
It depends on your AOWB license classification — confirm the amount on your application. This page is the $30,000 bond ($900 premium); if your license calls for $15,000, use the $15,000 portable restroom page ($450 premium).
How much is the $30,000 portable restroom bond? +
The premium is $900 — a flat 3% of the $30,000 bond amount. The amount is set by the Board, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $30,000? +
No. You pay $900. The $30,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section. Fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license, which the Board renews by December 31 each year. Buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.
