AL Advanced Level I bonds.
$900. Five minutes.

The Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board requires an Advanced Level I installer to file a $30,000 surety bond — double the basic-license amount — as a condition of the license. At our flat 3% that is $900, the same for every advanced installer.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Alabama licenses septic installers through the Onsite Wastewater Board (AOWB) in tiers. The Advanced Level I classification covers more complex onsite systems than the basic license, and the Board sets the bond at $30,000 — double the $15,000 basic-license amount.

The bond is a public-and-consumer-protection guarantee: a three-party arrangement among you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Alabama for the benefit of the public (the obligee). If an advanced installer violates the Onsite Wastewater law and a property owner is harmed, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of the license, so we track it and notify you ahead of the Board's December 31 renewal deadline.

Code of Ala. § 34-21A-16 (AOWB)The Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board is established under Code of Ala. 1975, § 34-21A, and § 34-21A-16 conditions a licensee on a surety bond. By Board rule (AOWB Administrative Code Chapter 628-X-3), advanced-level installers — Advanced Level I and Level II — post a $30,000 bond on the Board form, versus $15,000 for basic-level licensees. Renewed with the license by December 31 each year. Confirm the amount on your application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Alabama Advanced Level I bond? +
The premium is $900 — a flat 3% of the fixed $30,000 bond amount. The $30,000 is set by the Board for advanced-level installers, so there is no quote process.
Why is this more than the basic installer bond? +
The advanced-level bond is $30,000, double the $15,000 basic-license amount, so the flat 3% premium is $900 instead of $450. The rate is the same — the bond amount the Board requires is larger.
Do I pay the $30,000? +
No. You pay $900. The $30,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section. Fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license, which the Board renews by December 31 each year. Buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.
