AL basic installer bonds.
$450. Five minutes.

The Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board requires a licensed basic installer to file a $15,000 surety bond as a condition of the license. At our flat 3% that is $450 — above our $275 minimum, so $450 is what you pay. License bonds like this are the fastest thing we issue.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Alabama licenses septic installers through the Onsite Wastewater Board (AOWB). The basic installer license covers conventional onsite systems, and the Board conditions it on a $15,000 surety bond — a public-and-consumer-protection guarantee that you install systems in line with the Board's law and rules.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Alabama for the benefit of the public (the obligee). If an installer violates the Onsite Wastewater law and a property owner is harmed, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of the license, so we track it and notify you ahead of the Board's December 31 renewal deadline. Advanced Level I and II installers post a larger $30,000 bond — see those pages if you hold an advanced license.

Code of Ala. § 34-21A-16 (AOWB)The Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board is established under Code of Ala. 1975, § 34-21A, and § 34-21A-16 conditions a licensee on a surety bond. By Board rule (AOWB Administrative Code Chapter 628-X-3), basic-level licensees — including the basic installer — post a $15,000 bond on the Board form; advanced-level installers post $30,000. Renewed with the license by December 31 each year. Confirm the amount on your application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Alabama basic installer bond? +
The premium is $450 — a flat 3% of the fixed $15,000 bond amount, above our $275 minimum. The $15,000 is set by the Board, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $15,000? +
No. You pay $450. The $15,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What if I hold an advanced installer license? +
Advanced Level I and Level II installers post a larger $30,000 bond, not $15,000. We write those too — see the Advanced Level I and Advanced Level II pages.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license, which the Board renews by December 31 each year. Buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.
