The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) seeks to advance its mission by supporting multidisciplinary research through the Centers for Research on Neglected Infectious Diseases (CReNIDs). Neglected infectious diseases (NIDs) comprise a diverse and understudied group of communicable viral, bacterial, parasitic, and fungal infections that cause substantial morbidity, mortality, and long-term health consequences worldwide. This new research program will emphasize the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of communicable parasitic NIDs in endemic regions and build sustainable in-country research capacity and expertise.
The overarching goal is to protect and improve the health of the American people by strengthening US and global multidisciplinary research and training on NIDs to enable early identification, containment, and mitigation of infectious diseases at their sources, thereby reducing the risk of their spread to and within the United States. Grant authorities that allow NIAID to forecast this opportunity are as follows: Sections 301 and 405 of the Public Health Service Act as amended (42 USC 241 and 284) and under Federal Regulations 42 CFR Part 52 and 2 CFR Part 200.
The program will emphasize the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of communicable parasitic neglected infectious diseases in endemic regions, build sustainable in-country research capacity and expertise, and strengthen US and global multidisciplinary research and training to enable early identification, containment, and mitigation of infectious diseases at their sources to reduce the risk of spread to and within the United States.
