The project will reset succession in aging quaking aspen stands to stimulate new growth and increase available browse for moose and other wildlife. Treatment will primarily involve cutting, shearing, crushing, or breaking aspen stems. Limited treatment of black spruce and alder is allowed where necessary to facilitate operations. Slash shall be maintained at no more than 3 feet above ground, and stems greater than 4 inches in diameter shall be reduced to sections no longer than 6 feet. Work shall occur only when ground conditions are sufficiently frozen to prevent unacceptable rutting, soil disturbance, or compaction. The contractor must maintain a spill kit, follow invasive species prevention measures, and submit a proposed equipment and treatment methods document with their bid.
