Business owner’s policy
Business owner’s policy · For contractors and owners

Business owner’s policy application.

Property, general liability and business income in one policy, for a smaller contractor with an office or shop, or a business that owns, leases out or manages a building. A contractor answers about its work; a property business about its role and its tenants; both list their locations. Answer what you can and send it from the review sheet. Our brokerage takes it to market and comes back with quotes, or with questions.

Roofing often does not fit a business owner’s policy, and the form flags it as you answer. A larger contractor or portfolio can apply for general liability and commercial property separately.

Plan on 20 to 35 minutes for one location, with your current policy to hand. Your answers are kept in this browser tab only, with no account. Closing the tab clears them, so gather your documents first (the checklist lists them).

Insurers need this to quote. You can send with blanks; we’ll ask for the rest.

What to have on hand: each location’s details and your current policy (6 things)

The first question asks whether you are a contractor or a property business, and the second sheet follows that answer. Answer counts assume a contractor renting one office or shop, with no claims.

  • Your business basicsLegal name, FEIN, the year you started, revenue, headcount and payroll.
  • Each locationThe address, square footage, stories, year built, construction, sprinklers and alarms. The form lists ten locations. With more, send the full list to insurance@lightrfp.com (a spreadsheet is fine).
  • What to insure thereThe value of the equipment, furniture and stock at each location, and what it would cost to rebuild a building you own.
  • A building you ownThe years its roof, wiring, heating and plumbing were last updated.
  • Your current policyThe declarations page: limits, deductibles, premium and when it expires.
  • Loss runs, if you have themFive years of claims history from your current insurer. You can send them after by replying to your confirmation email.

After you send

  1. We read it

A Light RFP broker reads every answer, matches your business and your locations to the insurers’ classes, and asks about anything blank or flagged.

  2. We take it to market

Our brokerage takes it to the insurers whose appetite fits your work or your building.

  3. You compare and choose

Limits, deductibles, add-ons and exclusions side by side, matched to what your contracts, leases and lenders require. Our brokerage puts the policy you choose in force and issues your certificates.
