Wisconsin requires a credit services organization — a business that offers to improve a buyer's credit record or obtain an extension of credit for a buyer — to obtain a surety bond of $25,000 under Wis. Stat. 422.502(3), in favor of the state for the benefit of anyone damaged by a violation, with a copy filed with the administrator. At 1.5% of the bond amount, that prices at $375, the bond issues the moment you pay, and any credit screen is a soft pull only — it never affects your score.

A credit services organization under the Wisconsin Consumer Act is a person who sells, provides, or performs (or represents that they can) services to improve a buyer's credit record, history, or rating, or to obtain an extension of credit for a buyer. The organization must obtain a surety bond or letter of credit in an amount equal to $25,000, and file a copy with the administrator. It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The security has to stay in place for as long as you operate as a credit services organization; we track the term and send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.
