About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Wisconsin regulates professional boxing and mixed martial arts through the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS). Under Wis. Stat. 444.035, a promoter or club must post a bond of not less than $10,000 with its license application to secure payment of the expenses of an event.

The bond protects the people owed money when an event happens — in the order the statute sets, the department, then the contestants (the fighters), then the officials. If a promoter fails to pay those obligations, they can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you. If the surety pays a valid claim, you repay the surety. Promoters who pay their fighters and officials treat the bond as a license formality — we track it and notify you ahead of expiration so your DSPS license never lapses over a missed renewal.

Wis. Stat. 444.035Wis. Stat. 444.035 requires a boxing or mixed martial arts promoter or club to post a bond or other surety of not less than $10,000 with its license application, to ensure payment of the expenses of an event in the priority order of the department, the contestants, and the officials. The license is administered by the Department of Safety and Professional Services. Confirm the exact amount required on your DSPS application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Wisconsin boxing/MMA promoter bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the $10,000 bond amount, the same for every promoter. The $10,000 minimum is set by Wis. Stat. 444.035, so there is no quote process at that amount.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum exposure if a valid claim is made against the bond — it is not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who does the bond protect? +
The people owed money from an event, in the order the statute sets: the department first, then the contestants (fighters), then the officials. If you fail to pay those obligations, they can claim against the bond.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active while you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your DSPS license never lapses over a missed email.
