WA private investigative agency bonds.
$100 flat.

Washington requires every private investigative agency to file a fixed $10,000 bond with the Department of Licensing before an agency license issues. Ours is $100 flat, issued instantly — the same for every agency. The bond issues the moment you pay — no credit review of any kind, not even a soft pull.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Washington licenses private investigators through the Department of Licensing under chapter 18.165 RCW, and conditions an agency license on a $10,000 surety bond (an agency may file a certificate of insurance instead). The bond is a public-protection guarantee against wrongful or illegal acts in conducting the licensed business.

It's a three-party arrangement: the agency (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Washington (the obligee). Anyone injured by the agency or its officers, agents, or employees may sue directly on the bond in their own name — and the bond is subject to successive suits until the $10,000 face amount is exhausted.

The agency must keep the bond on file in full force at all times. If a valid claim is paid, the agency repays the surety — it is not insurance for the agency. We track the bond and notify you 60 and 30 days out, keeping your filing continuous.

RCW 18.165.100RCW 18.165.100 conditions a private investigator agency license on a $10,000 surety bond filed with the Department of Licensing, payable to the State of Washington, to recover for wrongful or illegal acts of the agency and its officers, agents, and employees. An injured person may sue directly on the bond, subject to successive suits until the face amount is exhausted. An agency may file a certificate of insurance in lieu of the bond.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Washington private investigative agency bond? The premium is $100, flat. Our carrier's rate book prices this fixed $10,000 bond at $100, the same for every agency. The $10,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000?No. You pay $100. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if valid claims are made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Does the individual investigator need a bond? The $10,000 bond requirement under RCW 18.165.100 is on the private investigative agency. Individual investigators are licensed under the same chapter but the bond is the agency's filing.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information — most agency bonds clear without any check.
When does it renew? The agency must keep the bond on file in full force at all times. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your agency license never lapses over a missed email.
