Reliant Energy deposit bonds.
2% of the bond amount.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the utility deposit bond actually does

Reliant Energy Retail Services, LLC is a retail electric provider (REP) operating in the deregulated areas of the Texas electric market regulated by the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT). Like other REPs, it can require a customer without an established credit history to post a security deposit before energizing service, and Reliant's own policy lets a customer satisfy that requirement with a surety bond instead of cash.

The bond is a guarantee to Reliant that your electric charges will be paid. If the account is closed with an unpaid balance, Reliant can recover against the bond up to the deposit amount, rather than against a cash deposit it would otherwise hold.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays Reliant, you repay the surety. The advantage is cash flow: you pay a small premium instead of locking up the full deposit. Enter the figure Reliant set and see your exact price — the bond issues the moment you pay, with no credit review of any kind, not even a soft pull.

Reliant Energy Retail Services — deposit policy (not a Texas statute)Reliant Energy Retail Services' own customer terms state that a surety bond can satisfy a deposit requirement in place of cash. The deposit itself is sized under Reliant's policy and capped by Public Utility Commission of Texas rule 16 Tex. Admin. Code §25.478, which limits a residential deposit to no more than the greater of one-fifth of the customer's estimated annual billing or the estimated billing for the next two months. We have not cited a statute section that names "surety bond" specifically, because that option comes from Reliant's own accepted-deposit-alternatives policy rather than the PUCT rule text — send us your Reliant deposit notice and we will confirm your required amount.
