Middle Tennessee Electric deposit bonds.
From $100. Enter your amount.

Instead of tying up cash as a membership deposit with Middle Tennessee Electric (MTE), an applicant for electric service across its Rutherford, Williamson, and surrounding-county territory can post a surety bond for the same figure. MTE sets the deposit amount — usually sized to your estimated or recent usage — and the premium is 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum; enter your amount in the calculator below for your exact price.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the utility deposit bond actually covers

Middle Tennessee Electric is a member-owned Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) power distributor and the largest electric cooperative in the state, serving Rutherford, Williamson, Cannon, Bedford, Coffee, and several other middle-Tennessee counties. Like other electric cooperatives, MTE can require a membership or service deposit before turning on power at a new address — generally sized to estimated or recent usage, and higher after a history of late payment. Rather than leave that cash sitting with the cooperative, MTE accepts a surety bond for the same amount in place of the cash.

The bond is a payment guarantee in lieu of the cash deposit: it stands behind the electric charges on your account. If the account goes unpaid and the deposit would have covered it, MTE can recover against the bond instead of drawing down a cash deposit.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays MTE, you repay the surety. The advantage is cash flow: you pay a small premium — from $100 — rather than locking up the full deposit amount. Enter the figure MTE set on your account notice and your exact price appears at the application.

Middle Tennessee Electric deposit policyMiddle Tennessee Electric is a member-owned electric distribution cooperative and TVA power distributor serving middle Tennessee; it is not subject to Tennessee Public Utility Commission retail-rate regulation the way an investor-owned utility is. As a matter of its own membership and service policy, the cooperative can require a security deposit as a condition of new, reinstated, or continued electric service, and accepts a surety bond in place of that cash deposit. The deposit amount and terms are set by MTE on your account — confirm the figure on your notice and we will issue the bond for it.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Middle Tennessee Electric deposit bond? The premium is 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum. The bond amount equals the deposit MTE set for your account — enter it in the on-page calculator for your exact price.
Why post a bond instead of a cash deposit?Cash flow. A cash deposit ties up the full amount with the cooperative, often for a year or more before it is refunded or credited. A surety bond covers the same obligation for a small premium — 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum — freeing your working capital.
Who sets the bond amount?MTE does — the bond is written for the same figure as the deposit it required on your account, typically based on estimated or historical usage. Enter that amount and we issue the bond for it.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information, and most applications issue instantly. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review — never a hard inquiry, and it never affects your credit score.
What amount should I enter? The exact deposit figure MTE stated on your account notice or new-service estimate. If you are unsure, call the number on that notice — the cooperative can confirm the required amount before you apply.
