Enter the amount BTES set for your account below for your exact price.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the utility deposit bond actually covers

When you apply for electric service with Bristol Tennessee Essential Services (BTES), the municipal electric system serving Bristol and parts of Sullivan and Washington counties, BTES's Rules and Regulations allow it to require a deposit — approximately twice the highest estimated monthly bill — plus a separate service activation charge under its Schedule of Rates and Charges. Rather than leave that cash sitting with the utility, BTES accepts a surety bond for the same amount in place of the cash.

The bond is a payment guarantee in lieu of the cash deposit: it stands behind the electric charges on your account. If the account goes unpaid and the deposit would have covered it, BTES can recover against the bond instead of drawing down a cash deposit.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays BTES, you repay the surety. The advantage is cash flow: you pay a small premium — from $100 — rather than locking up the full deposit amount. Enter the figure BTES set on your account application and your exact price appears at the application.

BTES sets the deposit figure and terms on your account application — confirm the exact amount with BTES and we will issue the bond for it.

Why post a bond instead of a cash deposit?Cash flow. A cash deposit ties up the full amount with BTES, often for a year or more before it is refunded or credited. A surety bond covers the same obligation for a small premium — 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum — freeing your working capital.
