About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the utility deposit bond actually does

When you open or hold an account with Public Service Company of Oklahoma (PSO), an American Electric Power operating company, the utility can require a security deposit against unpaid bills — standard practice for a new account, an account with a spotty payment history, or an account reclassified after a late payment. Rather than leaving cash on deposit, a customer can post a utility deposit surety bond for the same amount — PSO is protected, and the customer's money stays in their business or household.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and PSO (the obligee). If the account goes unpaid, PSO can recover the unpaid balance against the bond, up to the deposit amount it set.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. For most customers the bond is simply a cheaper way to satisfy a deposit requirement than tying up the full amount in cash. We price PSO's amount at 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum; the application collects no credit information.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the PSO / AEP utility deposit bond?Premiums are priced at 2% of the bond amount, with a $100 minimum. The amount itself is the deposit PSO set for your account. Enter that figure at the application and your exact price appears there.
What amount should I enter?Use the deposit figure Public Service Company of Oklahoma stated on your account notice or new-service estimate. If you are unsure, call PSO customer service — they can confirm the required amount before you apply.
What does the bond guarantee? It guarantees PSO's electric-service account against an unpaid balance, up to the deposit amount set. If the account goes unpaid, PSO can recover against the bond; if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Do I pay the full bond amount? No. You pay the premium — 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum — not the deposit figure itself. The bond stands behind the full amount; your out-of-pocket cost is the premium.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information, and most applications approve instantly. A quick soft pull may run on a larger amount — never a hard inquiry, and it never affects your credit score.
