About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the agent bond actually guarantees

An Oklahoma motor license agent — a “tag agent” — is appointed to process vehicle registrations and titles and to collect the registration fees and taxes that go with them. Because an agent handles public money, the law conditions the appointment on a faithful-performance surety bond for the fees and taxes collected.

The bond is a guarantee that the agent accounts for and remits every dollar collected and faithfully performs the duties of the appointment. The beneficiary is the State of Oklahoma; if an agent fails to remit collections, the state can recover against the bond.

The amount is set by the state: under 47 O.S. § 1140 a motor license agent furnishes a faithful-performance bond of $30,000, which the state can scale up with the volume of business or reduce to a figure commensurate with that volume — but never below $5,000. (Service Oklahoma now administers tag agents, work that historically sat with the Tax Commission.) Enter the amount you were assigned and your premium (from $100, 1% of bond amount) appears at the application.

47 O.S. § 1140 (motor license agents)Oklahoma motor license agents are appointed and bonded under 47 O.S. § 1140. An agent furnishes a faithful-performance surety (or cash) bond of $30,000, or such additional amount as the state requires; the state may lower the amount to a figure commensurate with the agent’s volume of business, but in no event below $5,000. Tag-agent oversight has moved to Service Oklahoma. Confirm the amount set for your appointment before filing.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Oklahoma motor license agent bond?Premiums are 1% of your bond amount, with a $100 minimum — a fixed rate, not a credit tier. The amount itself is set by the state — a $30,000 baseline under 47 O.S. § 1140, scalable to your volume of business but never below $5,000. Enter that figure and your exact price appears at the application.
Who sets the bond amount? The state. Under 47 O.S. § 1140 the baseline is $30,000, which can be increased with your volume of business or reduced to a figure commensurate with that volume — but never below $5,000. Confirm the amount set for your appointment.
What does the bond guarantee? That you faithfully perform the duties of the appointment and account for and remit every fee and tax dollar you collect for the state. If you fail to remit, the state can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Who administers tag agents now?Service Oklahoma now administers the motor license agent program, work that historically sat with the Oklahoma Tax Commission. The bond requirement under 47 O.S. § 1140 carries over — confirm the current filing instructions for your appointment.
Is there a credit check?A quick soft credit check may apply — it is never a hard inquiry and never affects your score. Premiums are 1% of your bond amount, with a $100 minimum, set independently of the credit check.
