About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A Toledo sidewalk contractor bond is a right-of-way guarantee to the city. It backs your promise to build and repair public sidewalks to the City of Toledo's specifications and to restore the right-of-way properly when you finish.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Toledo (the obligee). If sidewalk work is left defective or the public right-of-way is damaged and not restored, the city can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who build to Toledo spec and restore the right-of-way treat the bond as a registration formality, nothing more.

City of Toledo — Division of InspectionThe City of Toledo requires a $3,000 surety bond as a condition of sidewalk contractor registration for work in the public right-of-way; the bond amount and terms are set by the City of Toledo Division of Inspection. The bond runs to the City of Toledo as obligee and renews on the statutory December 31 date.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the City of Toledo sidewalk contractor bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. Three percent of the $3,000 bond amount is $90, which is below the $275 minimum, so the price is $275. The bond amount is set by Toledo, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $3,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $3,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? +
Municipal bonds like this usually issue right after purchase — many contractors finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount municipal bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
Toledo ties renewal to the statutory December 31 date. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out so your registration never lapses over a missed email.
