About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Mahoning County registers the contractors who connect ("tap") private service lines into its sanitary sewer mains, and conditions that registration on a $15,000 surety bond. The bond is a workmanship-and-compliance guarantee: it stands behind your obligation to tap, connect, and backfill according to the county's sewer regulations and to restore any public property you disturb.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and Mahoning County (the obligee). If a tapper damages a county main, leaves a connection out of spec, or fails to make required repairs, the county can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Tappers who follow the county sewer code and restore their cuts treat the bond as a registration formality, not a risk.

Mahoning County Sanitary EngineerMahoning County requires this bond as a condition of registering as a sewer tapper / connection contractor; the $15,000 amount and the bond terms are set by the Mahoning County Sanitary Engineer's office, which administers the county sewer system. We issue the amount and form the county requires — send us your registration packet if you want us to confirm the current figure.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Mahoning County sewer tapper bond? +
The premium is $450 — a flat 3% of the $15,000 bond amount, the same for every tapper. The $15,000 is set by the county, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $15,000? +
No. You pay $450. The $15,000 is the surety's maximum liability to Mahoning County if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Mahoning County Sanitary Engineer requires it as a condition of registering as a sewer tapper, to protect the county sewer system and public property during connections.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It's the only extra step beyond the application, and it informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
When does it renew? +
This bond is on the county's statutory cycle and renews 12/31. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your registration never lapses.
