About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

When you open, cut, or occupy a public street, tree lawn, or sidewalk in the City of Chardon, the City conditions the right-of-way permit on a bond. The bond guarantees you'll restore the right-of-way to its prior condition — repave the cut, replace the curb, regrade the lawn — and follow the permit's conditions.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier standing behind you, and the City of Chardon (the obligee). If a permit holder leaves a defective patch, damages City property, or abandons a restoration, the City can recover against the bond to make the repair.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays the City on a claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who backfill and restore properly treat the bond as a permit formality, not a risk.

City of Chardon — right-of-way / street opening permitThe City of Chardon requires a $5,000 surety bond as a condition of issuing a right-of-way permit to open, occupy, or work within the City public right-of-way. The bond amount and terms are set by the City of Chardon; the $5,000 penal sum is shown read-only on the application. We have not cited a numbered codified ordinance because the requirement is administered through the City permit process rather than published here as a numbered statute.

You need this bond if you're

Pulling a Chardon right-of-way permit to open or occupy a public street
A utility or telecom contractor running lines through the City right-of-way
A driveway or sewer-tap contractor cutting the street, curb, or tree lawn
A general contractor staging equipment or materials in the public right-of-way

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Chardon right-of-way bond? +
The premium is $275 — our flat minimum. The bond amount is fixed at $5,000 by the City, and 3% of $5,000 is only $150, under our $275 floor. So it is $275 for every permit holder.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the City if a valid claim is made — it is not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? +
Small municipal bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many contractors finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount municipal bonds like this one don't need one.
What does the bond cover? +
Restoration of the City right-of-way you disturbed and compliance with your permit conditions. If you leave a bad patch or damage City property and a valid claim is paid, you repay the surety.
