About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

New Jersey requires many DWI offenders to drive only vehicles fitted with an ignition interlock device — a breath-alcohol interlock that prevents the car from starting if alcohol is detected — under N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.17. Only approved service providers may install and calibrate these devices, and the installer bond backs that work.

The bond is a performance-and-compliance guarantee. It stands behind the installer's obligation to install, service, and report on devices according to the program's rules, so the courts and the Motor Vehicle Commission can rely on accurate interlock compliance. If an installer's misconduct causes a loss, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

The bond must stay active while you hold the installer approval. It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. We track the bond and notify you 60 and 30 days before expiration so your approval never lapses over a missed renewal.

N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.17 (ignition interlock program)New Jersey's ignition interlock requirement for DWI offenders is set by N.J.S.A. 39:4-50.17, with the program administered through the courts and the Motor Vehicle Commission. Approved interlock-device installers are required to carry a $10,000 surety bond backing their installation and service obligations. Confirm the current bond requirement with the program administering your approval.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the NJ interlock installer bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every installer. The $10,000 is set by the program, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? +
License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many installers finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active while you hold the installer approval. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your approval never lapses over a missed email.
