About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A Nevada garage that performs repairs or storage registers with the Department of Motor Vehicles, and NRS 487.563 conditions that registration on a $5,000 surety bond (or an equivalent deposit). The bond is a consumer-protection guarantee standing behind honest work and your compliance with Nevada's garage and vehicle-repair laws.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the DMV together with harmed customers. If a garage fails to perform, commits fraud, or violates the repair statutes and a customer is injured, that person can bring an action on the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Operators who do clean work treat the bond as a registration formality, and we keep your $5,000 filing continuous.

NRS 487.563A Nevada garage registers with the Department of Motor Vehicles under NRS 487.560 to 487.570, and NRS 487.563 requires the operator to file a $5,000 surety bond (or deposit of money or securities in lieu of a bond) to obtain the certificate of registration. The certificate can be revoked or refused renewal for failure to maintain the bond.

You need this bond if you're

Registering an NV garage that performs vehicle repairs or storage
Renewing a garage registration and your current bond is expiring or non-renewing
Adding a service location the DMV ties to a separate registration and bond
Reinstating a certificate after it lapsed for a missing bond

Five minutes. The whole thing.

These are the actual issuing fields — no credit check section, because this bond doesn't have one.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Nevada garage operator bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. A flat 3% of the $5,000 bond would be $150, but it falls below the $275 minimum, so $275 is the price. The $5,000 amount is set by the DMV under NRS 487.563.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What's the difference between this and the body shop bond? +
A garage registers under NRS 487.563 with a $5,000 bond ($275 from us). A body shop is separately licensed under NRS 487.640 with a $10,000 bond ($300 from us). If you do collision and paint work, the DMV may require the body shop license — ask the DMV which applies, or send us your situation.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount registration bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as your registration is in force. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
