About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Nebraska licenses private detectives and private detective agencies through the Secretary of State, and conditions the license on a $10,000 surety bond. The bond is a public-protection guarantee: it stands behind your ethical conduct and your compliance with the Private Detectives and Private Detective Agencies Act.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the State of Nebraska, with anyone harmed by your conduct as the protected party. If a detective violates the Act in the course of the business, a harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The Nebraska detective license runs in two-year cycles, so the bond is conditioned to track your license term; we notify you 60 and 30 days out so it never lapses.

Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 71-3201 to 71-3213Nebraska's Private Detectives and Private Detective Agencies Act (Neb. Rev. Stat. §§ 71-3201 to 71-3213) requires every applicant to file and maintain a $10,000 surety bond with the Secretary of State, conditioned on the applicant's ethical conduct and strict compliance with § 71-3207. The license operates on a two-year cycle.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Nebraska private detective bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, the same for every detective. The $10,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Where do I file the bond? +
With the Nebraska Secretary of State, which licenses private detectives and detective agencies under the Private Detectives and Private Detective Agencies Act. We issue the executed bond ready to file with your application.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The Nebraska detective license runs in two-year cycles. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
