About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD) licenses the plumbers, sewer, and drainlayer contractors who connect to and work on its public sewer system, and conditions that license on a $10,000 surety bond. The bond stands behind your compliance with MSD's rules and the work you perform on the District's system.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (the obligee). The bond guarantees that your sewer and drainlaying work meets District standards and that damage to the public system is made good. If you fail to, MSD can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays an MSD claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who build to District standard treat the bond as a license formality.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the MSD plumber/drainlayer bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the $10,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. MSD sets the $10,000 amount, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the District; it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District requires it as a condition of its plumber / sewer / drainlayer contractor license. No active bond, no license.
What does the bond guarantee? +
That your sewer and drainlaying work meets MSD standards and that damage to the public system is made good. If the surety pays a District claim, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
