About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the promoter bond actually guarantees

Missouri regulates professional boxing, sparring, wrestling, kickboxing, full-contact karate, and mixed martial arts through the Office of Athletics within the Division of Professional Registration, under Chapter 317, RSMo. House Bill 1388 (effective August 28, 2018) expanded the definition of a combative sports promoter and added the bond requirement.

A promoter must file a $25,000 surety bond (or an irrevocable letter of credit) as part of licensing. The bond guarantees the promoter pays all athletic taxes and license fees owed to the state, and the expenses of contestants and officials for the events it puts on — if a promoter stiffs the state or its fighters and officials, they can recover against the bond.

It is a three-party guarantee, not insurance for you: if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The state uses fixed renewal dates (July 1), so your term aligns to the statutory cycle.

Chapter 317, RSMo (Office of Athletics)Professional boxing, sparring, wrestling, kickboxing, full-contact karate, and mixed martial arts are regulated under Chapter 317, RSMo, administered by the Office of Athletics. Following HB 1388 (effective August 28, 2018), a combative sports promoter must post a $25,000 surety bond or irrevocable letter of credit guaranteeing payment of athletic taxes, license fees, and the expenses of contestants and officials. Confirm the current requirement with the Office of Athletics.

Promoting wrestling or kickboxing exhibitions that fall under Chapter 317

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750 — the flat 3% of the bond amount. The $25,000 is the surety’s maximum liability to the state, contestants, and officials; it’s not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Office of Athletics, within Missouri’s Division of Professional Registration, requires it of combative sports promoters under Chapter 317, RSMo. The requirement was added by HB 1388, effective August 28, 2018.
What does the bond guarantee? +
That you pay all athletic taxes and license fees owed to the state, and the expenses of contestants and officials for your events. If you don’t, they can claim against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
Is there a credit check? +
Yes — one soft credit pull, which never affects your score. It informs approval, not price. The rate is a flat 3% either way.
When does it renew? +
The Office of Athletics uses fixed July 1 renewal dates, so your bond term aligns to that cycle. We send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your license never lapses over a missed email.
