What the Class B wrecker bond guarantees
The City of Minneapolis licenses building wreckers in two classes. A Class A wrecker may tear down any building regardless of size or height, on a $50,000 bond; a Class B wrecker is limited to buildings no taller than three stories or 35 feet, and no larger than 10,000 square feet above grade, on a fixed $10,000 surety bond. The bond is a public-safety and compliance guarantee: it stands behind demolition work meeting the City’s wrecking-permit requirements and not endangering the public right-of-way, adjacent structures, or workers.
It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Minneapolis (the obligee). If a Class B wrecker demolishes outside its class limits, violates a wrecking permit condition, or leaves an unsafe site, the City can recover against the bond.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays the City, you repay the surety. Note that a license is not required at all to tear down a building of two stories or less, or a minor building of 1,000 square feet or less — the City’s Class B license applies above those thresholds and below the Class A cutoff.
