About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A Maine professional investigator bond is an honest-conduct guarantee. Under 32 M.R.S. §8111, the bond is conditioned on the honest conduct of your investigative business — and it gives any person injured by an intentional, knowing, reckless, or negligent act of the licensee the right to bring an action on the bond in their own name.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the people your work touches as the protected parties. The bond is filed with the Chief of the State Police, who administers professional investigator licensing in Maine.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a valid claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay active for the life of your license, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out to keep your $10,000 filing continuous.

32 M.R.S. §8111Title 32, Chapter 89 (Professional Investigators), §8111 requires a licensed professional investigator to file a surety bond of $10,000 if the licensee is a resident of the State, and $50,000 if not a resident, conditioned on the honest conduct of the business, with a direct right of action for any person injured by the licensee. Filed with the Chief of the State Police. Confirm the resident amount on your license application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Maine resident private investigator bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the fixed $10,000 bond amount, which clears our $275 minimum. The $10,000 is set by 32 M.R.S. §8111, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What if I am not a Maine resident? +
Non-residents file a $50,000 bond instead of $10,000 under the same statute. This page is the resident $10,000 bond — if you are out of state, ask us for the non-resident version.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out so your license never lapses over a missed email.
