What the tag agency bond actually guarantees
A Louisiana public license tag agent contracts with the Office of Motor Vehicles to process vehicle registrations, titles, and plate transactions for the public. Under La. R.S. 47:532.1, a tag agent (other than a local government or state agency) must execute a surety bond naming the OMV as obligee.
The bond is conditioned on the agent timely filing all applications it takes in, and timely remitting all fees and taxes it collects, to the OMV. If the agent collects public money and fails to deliver the applications, fees, or taxes, the state can recover against the bond.
The amount is set by statute by the number of offices: $100,000 for an agent with a single office, and $125,000 for an agent with more than one office. This page is the $125,000 multi-office bond. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety.
