About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

A master plumber bond is a workmanship-and-compliance guarantee. The Unified Government wants a financial backstop that your plumbing work meets code and that the public is protected from damage caused by your work.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (the obligee). If your work damages persons or property or violates the plumbing code, the Unified Government and harmed parties can recover against the bond.

The bond must stay active for the life of your license. The Wyandotte County term runs annually through December 31 — let it lapse and your license is in jeopardy, so we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out. It is not insurance for you: if the surety pays, you repay the surety.

Wyandotte County Code of Ordinances, Sec. 8-378Under the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas Code of Ordinances Article VI (Plumbing), Sec. 8-378, each applicant for a master plumbing contractor's license must post a $5,000 surety bond, approved as to form by the Unified Government, conditioned on compliance with applicable regulations and holding the Unified Government harmless from damages resulting from the plumbing work. The bond is filed with the Building Inspections Division.
