About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Citizens Water, the public water utility serving Indianapolis and Marion County, requires plumbers who tap or connect to its water mains to post a $25,000 bond. The bond is a system-protection guarantee: it stands behind your compliance with the utility’s connection standards and rules.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and Citizens Water (the obligee). If a plumber damages the system, makes a non-compliant connection, or violates the utility’s rules, Citizens Water can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Plumbers who connect to spec treat the bond as a registration formality, and we keep your $25,000 filing continuous.

Citizens Water (Indianapolis)Citizens Water — the public charitable trust water utility serving Indianapolis and Marion County — requires a $25,000 plumber bond as a condition of registering to work on connections to its water system. The bond amount and terms are set by Citizens Water. Confirm registration details with the utility — we issue the executed $25,000 bond.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Citizens Water plumber bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the fixed $25,000 bond amount, the same for every plumber. The $25,000 is set by the utility, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the surety’s maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? +
Fixed-amount license bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many plumbers finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don’t need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you are registered with Citizens Water. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
