About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Batavia licenses pawnbrokers at the municipal level, and the license comes with a $1,000 surety bond in favor of the City. The bond backs your compliance with the City's pawnbroker regulations — the record-keeping, holding-period, and conduct rules that protect people who pledge property with a pawnshop.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Batavia (the obligee). If the City or a resident sustains a loss because a licensed pawnbroker violates the licensing rules, recovery can be made against the bond up to the $1,000 penal sum.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Note that Illinois pawnbrokers are also licensed at the state level under the Pawnbroker Regulation Act of 2023 (205 ILCS 511); Batavia's municipal bond is a separate, local requirement, and the license can't issue without it. We track the term and send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

City of Batavia municipal licensingThe $1,000 pawnbroker bond is required by the City of Batavia as a condition of its municipal pawnbroker license — confirm the current filing requirements with the Batavia City Clerk. State-level pawnbroker licensing runs separately through IDFPR under the Pawnbroker Regulation Act of 2023 (205 ILCS 511).

You need this bond if you're

Opening a pawnshop in Batavia — the bond files with your municipal license application
Renewing a Batavia pawnbroker license — the bond must stay on file with the City
A secondhand or precious-metal dealer whose Batavia operations include pawnbroking
Reinstating a license that lapsed with an expired bond

One application, issued instantly.

These are the actual issuing fields — business details, an effective date, and a term. That is the entire application.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Batavia pawnbroker bond? The premium is $100 flat — set by our carrier's rate book for this bond, the same for every pawnbroker. The $1,000 bond amount is set by the City of Batavia, so there is no quote process, and the price you see is the checkout price.
Do I pay the $1,000?No. You pay $100. The $1,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How fast will I have the bond? This bond is checkout-priced, so it issues the moment you pay — your e-signed bond and power of attorney arrive by email, ready to file with the City of Batavia.
Is this the same as the Illinois state pawnbroker license? No. Illinois licenses pawnbrokers statewide through IDFPR under the Pawnbroker Regulation Act of 2023, and Batavia layers its own municipal license on top. This $1,000 bond satisfies the City of Batavia's local requirement — confirm your full checklist with the City Clerk.
Is there a credit check? If a credit screen runs on this bond, it is a soft pull only — never a hard inquiry, and it never affects your score. The price stays $100 flat either way.
