About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the serviceman bond guarantees

Georgia requires anyone who installs, repairs, services, or reconditions commercial weighing and measuring devices — retail and industrial scales, fuel pumps, moisture meters — to register with the Department of Agriculture under its Fuel & Measures rules (Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 40-15-2-.05). Registration includes filing a $1,000 bond.

The bond is a public-protection guarantee: commercial weighing devices set rates and charges that consumers and businesses rely on, so the state wants a financial backstop that a registered serviceman calibrates and certifies them accurately and follows the rules.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The amount is fixed at $1,000, so the price is fixed too. We issue it at our $275 minimum with no credit check.

Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 40-15-2-.05The Georgia Department of Agriculture, Fuel & Measures Division registers servicemen and service agencies for commercial weighing and measuring devices under Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 40-15-2-.05, which conditions registration on a $1,000 surety bond. The bond backs the accuracy and compliance of devices a registered serviceman installs, repairs, or reconditions. Confirm the current bond form with the Department.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Georgia serviceman bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. The flat 3% rate applied to the $1,000 bond comes to $30, which falls under the $275 floor, so $275 is the price for every serviceman.
Do I pay the $1,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $1,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The Georgia Department of Agriculture, Fuel & Measures Division, as a condition of registering as a serviceman or service agency for commercial weighing and measuring devices.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the application has no credit section. Small fixed-amount registration bonds like this issue without one.
When does it renew? +
You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available, so your registration never lapses over a missed email.
