The City of Savannah's Code of Ordinances devotes a dedicated article to private detectives, security services, and alarm system businesses. Before it will license a detective agency or an alarm company to operate in the city, the code conditions that license on a $1,000 surety bond.
It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Savannah (the obligee), with clients and the general public as the protected parties. If a licensed detective agency or alarm company violates the licensing ordinance or harms a client through its conduct, a claim can be brought against the bond up to the $1,000 penal sum.
It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay current for as long as the agency or alarm business holds its city license, so plan on renewing it alongside your license every year.
