About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the Okefenoke REMC deposit bond actually does

Okefenoke Rural Electric Membership Corporation is a member-owned, nonprofit electric cooperative serving over 42,000 commercial, industrial, and residential accounts across southeast Georgia (and part of northeast Florida) from its headquarters in Nahunta. Rather than compel a member to leave a cash security deposit on file, Okefenoke REMC will accept a surety bond in the same amount instead.

It is a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and Okefenoke REMC (the obligee). If the account goes unpaid, the cooperative can claim against the bond up to the stated amount; if the surety pays, you repay the surety — the bond is not insurance for you.

Under the cooperative's own deposit rule, a required deposit — or the bond that replaces it — may not exceed two and one-half times your highest estimated or actual monthly bill, and Okefenoke REMC may waive part of that figure based on your credit factors. Enter the amount stated on your service or deposit notice; we price the bond at 2% of that amount, $100 minimum, and the application collects no credit information.

Okefenoke REMC — Rules and Regulations (deposit policy)Okefenoke Rural Electric Membership Corporation, an electric membership corporation organized under O.C.G.A. Title 46, Chapter 3, Article 4, may require a member deposit not to exceed two and one-half times the highest estimated or actual monthly bill, under its own Rules and Regulations; the security deposit or a portion of it may be waived based on credit factors the cooperative determines. Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 46-3-177) exempts electric membership corporations from the jurisdiction of the Georgia Public Service Commission except as separately provided under the Georgia Territorial Electric Service Act. Okefenoke REMC will accept a surety bond in lieu of that cash deposit. This is Okefenoke REMC's own contractual security requirement, not a fixed statewide statutory deposit amount. Confirm your required bond amount and current deposit policy with Okefenoke REMC member services before filing.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Okefenoke REMC utility deposit bond? The premium is priced by your bond amount, not a credit or underwriting tier — 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum. The bond amount itself is capped at 2.5 times your highest estimated or actual monthly bill under Okefenoke REMC's own deposit rule. Your exact price appears in the on-page calculator.
What amount should I enter? The deposit figure Okefenoke REMC quoted your account, which cannot exceed 2.5 times your highest estimated or actual monthly bill. The cooperative may waive part of that figure based on your credit factors — confirm your exact amount with member services.
What does the bond guarantee? It guarantees Okefenoke REMC will be paid for electric service if your account goes unpaid, up to the bond amount. If the cooperative claims against the bond and the surety pays, you repay the surety — the bond is not insurance for you, it secures the cooperative.
Is there a credit check? The application collects no credit information. Most applications approve instantly; if a check ever runs on a larger bond amount, it is a soft pull that will not affect your score.
Do I pay the full bond amount? No. You pay the premium — 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum — not the deposit figure itself. The full bond amount is what the surety could be asked to pay Okefenoke REMC if your account defaults; your out-of-pocket cost is the premium.
