About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the branch auto tag bond actually covers

In Miami-Dade County, a private business can operate as a branch auto tag agency — handling vehicle registrations, titles, and tags for the public on behalf of the Miami-Dade County Tax Collector. The agency collects registration fees, title fees, and sales tax that belong to the County and the state, so the County requires a bond.

The Miami-Dade County Tax Collector oversees each branch agency under a service agreement, and the bond stands behind the County and State money the agency collects. It guarantees the branch agency accounts for and remits the funds it collects and processes title and tag work correctly. If the agency fails to remit or mishandles a transaction, a claim can be made against the bond up to the bonded amount.

It is not insurance for you. If the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. A branch agency that remits on schedule and keeps clean records treats the bond as an appointment formality.

Miami-Dade County Implementing Order 4-83, item 6 (effective July 16, 2023)Implementing Order 4-83, the rules for branch auto tag agencies under Chapter 2, Article XVII of the Code of Miami-Dade County, sets the minimum bond for each agency at 25% of the average monthly County and State auto tag related revenues it collected, excluding sales tax, in the preceding fiscal year beginning October 1.

FAQ

Common questions.

How much is the Miami-Dade branch auto tag bond?Pricing is 0.5% of the bond amount, $100 minimum. The amount itself follows a County formula: at least 25% of your agency’s average monthly County and State auto tag revenues, excluding sales tax, for the preceding fiscal year. Enter that figure and your exact price, calculated from the bond amount, appears before you pay.
Do I pay the full bond amount? No. You pay the premium shown at application, starting from $100 — not the bond amount. The bond amount is the most the bond pays if you fail to remit funds or mishandle transactions — it is not money anyone holds from you.
Is there a credit check? At the standard amounts the application collects no credit information, and most applications approve instantly. Larger bond amounts add a credit-consent step on the form; if a check ever runs, it is a soft pull that will not affect your score.
What does the bond guarantee? That your branch tag agency accounts for and remits the registration, title, and tax funds it collects and processes transactions correctly. If you fail to and money goes unremitted, a claim can be made against the bond, and if the surety pays, you repay the surety.
What amount should I enter?Take 25% of your agency’s average monthly County and State auto tag revenues, excluding sales tax, for the preceding fiscal year that began October 1. That is the minimum. If you are not sure, ask the Tax Collector’s office for the required bond amount and enter that.
Which A-rated carriers underwrite these bonds?Typically Arch Insurance Company (A.M. Best A+) or Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company (A.M. Best A). Which one writes your bond depends on the bond type and your state. The carrier's name and official signature are printed on the bond you receive.
How do I contact Light RFP about this bond?Email insurance@lightrfp.com. It reaches the bond team at Light RFP Risk Management Services LLC (NY DFS License # PC-1978982). Write to us about quotes, applications, bond forms or certificates. We will respond within 24 hours.
