About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Durango requires every master plumber to execute a good and sufficient $5,000 bond with the City Clerk's office before doing plumbing work in the city. A plumber who holds a state master plumber's license and a Durango business license, and files this bond, is qualified to plumb within the city.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Durango (the obligee). The bond stands behind your compliance with the city's plumbing code — if defective work or a code violation causes a loss, the harmed party can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Plumbers who work to code treat the bond as a licensing formality, and we keep your $5,000 filing continuous with renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

City of Durango plumbing code (Sec. 13-89)The City of Durango requires every master plumber to execute a good and sufficient bond in the sum of $5,000 with the City Clerk's office as a condition of doing plumbing work in the city, under the city's plumbing provisions (Section 13-89 of the municipal code). Confirm the current amount and the city-issued bond form on your application with the City Clerk.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Durango plumbing bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. A flat 3% of the $5,000 bond would be $150, which is below our floor, so the price is $275, the same for every plumber.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the City of Durango if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Who requires this bond? +
The City of Durango requires it of every master plumber, filed with the City Clerk's office, under the city's plumbing code (Section 13-89). You also need a state master plumber's license and a Durango business license.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount municipal license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay on file with the City Clerk for as long as you plumb in Durango. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
