About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Alaska requires construction contractors to register under AS 08.18, administered by the Division of Corporations, Business, and Professional Licensing. A handyman contractor — limited to smaller jobs under the statute — registers with a $5,000 surety bond under AS 08.18.071.

The bond is a public-and-consumer-protection guarantee: it stands behind your compliance with Alaska's contractor laws and protects people who are harmed if you fail to perform or violate the registration requirements. It's a three-party arrangement — you (the principal), the surety, and the State of Alaska (the obligee).

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The handyman bond is $5,000; general contractors file $10,000 and specialty/mechanical contractors file $10,000 as well, with larger amounts in some categories. Confirm your registration type and we'll issue the matching bond.

AS 08.18.071 (Construction contractor registration)Alaska Statute 08.18.071 requires a contractor to file a surety bond as a condition of registration with the Division of Corporations, Business, and Professional Licensing. A handyman contractor files a $5,000 bond; a general contractor files $10,000; mechanical and specialty contractors file $10,000. The bond must be dated within 30 days of filing. Confirm your registration class on your application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Alaska handyman contractor bond? +
The premium is $275 — our flat minimum. Three percent of the $5,000 bond amount is only $150, which falls under the $275 minimum, so every registrant pays the same $275. The $5,000 amount is set by statute.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
What if I'm a general or specialty contractor, not a handyman? +
Those registrations carry larger bonds — generally $10,000 for general, mechanical, and specialty contractors. This page is the $5,000 handyman bond; tell us your registration class and we'll issue the matching bond.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount registration bonds like this one don't need one.
How current does the bond need to be? +
Alaska wants the bond dated no more than 30 days before it's received, and your business name on the bond must match your registration exactly. Apply close to when you submit, and we'll make sure the names line up.
