Spire Alabama utility deposit bonds.
From $100. Enter your amount.

Instead of tying up cash as a security deposit with Spire Alabama (the natural gas utility regulated by the Alabama Public Service Commission), a customer opening or reinstating gas service can post a surety bond for the same amount. Spire's billing department sets the deposit figure — typically your estimated or highest recent monthly bill — and the premium is 2% of the bond amount, $100 minimum; enter your amount in the calculator below for your exact price.

About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the utility deposit bond actually covers

Spire Alabama is a natural gas utility — the successor to Alabama Gas Corporation ("Alagasco") — regulated by the Alabama Public Service Commission. Under the Commission's general rules for customer deposits, a gas utility may require a security deposit from a new, reinstated, or delinquent customer, capped at an estimated bill for roughly two regular billing periods. Rather than leave that cash sitting with Spire, its billing department accepts a surety bond for the same amount in place of the cash.

The bond is a payment guarantee in lieu of the cash deposit: it stands behind the gas charges on your account. If the account goes unpaid and the deposit would have covered it, Spire can recover against the bond instead of drawing down a cash deposit.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays Spire, you repay the surety. The advantage is cash flow: you pay a small premium — from $100 — rather than locking up the full deposit amount. Enter the figure on your Spire account notice and your exact price appears at the application.

Code r. 770-X-1-.08 · Spire Alabama billing dept.Alabama Administrative Code r. 770-X-1-.08 caps a Public Service Commission–regulated utility's customer deposit at an estimated bill for two regular billing periods, and requires the utility to credit annual interest on cash deposits held. Spire Alabama, the PSC-regulated gas utility, sets the actual deposit figure on new, reinstated, and payment-flagged accounts and its billing department (800-292-4008) confirms whether a surety bond will be accepted in place of cash on your account — confirm the exact figure on your service notice and we issue the bond for it.
