About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

The City of Birmingham licenses the trades that work inside the city, and conditions a combined plumber & gas fitter license on a $10,000 surety bond filed with the city. The bond is a code-compliance and public-safety guarantee: it backs your promise to do plumbing and gas-fitting work to the city's codes.

It's a three-party arrangement: you (the principal), the surety carrier, and the City of Birmingham (the obligee). If your work violates the city's plumbing or gas ordinances and the city or a harmed party suffers a loss, they can recover against the bond.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. Contractors who pull permits and work to code treat the bond as a license formality, and we keep it continuous with renewal notices 60 and 30 days out.

City of Birmingham trade license bondThe City of Birmingham requires a $10,000 surety bond as a condition of its plumber & gas fitter license; the bond amount and terms are set by the City's licensing and inspection authority. We confirm the current bond form and amount against the City's application before issuing.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Birmingham plumber & gas fitter bond? +
The premium is $300 — a flat 3% of the $10,000 bond amount, the same for every contractor. The $10,000 is set by the City, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $10,000? +
No. You pay $300. The $10,000 is the surety's maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — it's not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
How is this different from the plumber & pipe fitter bond? +
They're separate City of Birmingham trade licenses — one covers plumbing & pipe fitting, this one covers combined plumbing & gas fitting. Both are $10,000 / $300. File the one your Birmingham license category calls for.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount municipal license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the Birmingham license. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
