Provided Tissue Aging Rate in Space (TARIS) exceeds Tissue Aging Rate on Earth (TAROE) at a rate that exceeds the on Earth breakeven cost for new drug R&D, COSMOS will create a first-in-class platform for fully autonomous, high-throughput drug screening in LEO that would be more cost effective and faster than new drug R&D on Earth.

Performers will establish and validate microphysiological systems (MPS) for one target organ (brain, heart, uterus, or kidney). Phase I includes a terrestrial study and a LEO Twin Study using 384 MPSs from 32 donors across three age brackets (30±2, 45±2, 65±2 years), with two space launches at months 19 and 23. Phase II requires developing MPS-based disease models for tissues where TARIS exceeds TAROE and conducting drug screening in LEO in partnership with a Fortune 100 biopharmaceutical company, with two additional launches at months 39 and 41. Performers must create in silico aging models, manage data, and meet commercialization requirements.
