What the bonded title actually does

When you buy or receive a vehicle and the paperwork is missing or the chain of ownership is incomplete, Wisconsin lets you establish ownership with a bonded title under Wis. Stat. § 342.12(3)(b). You post a surety bond, WisDOT issues a certificate of title in your name, and the bond protects anyone who later proves a superior claim to the vehicle.

The bond amount is one and a half times the vehicle's value, with a $2,500 minimum. The DMV reviews the documentation you submit with the bond title application and sets the value — so confirm the figure on your DMV worksheet before you buy the bond.

If someone with a better claim comes forward and is harmed, they can recover against the bond — and if the surety pays, you repay the surety. The bond runs a 5-year term; after five years with no valid claim, WisDOT removes the bonded brand and a clean title issues.

Wis. Stat. § 342.12(3)(b)Wisconsin Statutes § 342.12(3)(b) lets an applicant who cannot provide satisfactory proof of ownership obtain a certificate of title by filing a surety bond with the Department of Transportation. WisDOT sets the bond at one and a half times the vehicle's value (minimum $2,500). The bond protects any prior owner or subsequent purchaser, runs for five years, and is released when the brand is removed.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Wisconsin lost title bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The bond amount is set at 1.5 times the vehicle’s value (minimum $2,500), so smaller bonds land at the $275 minimum and the premium scales up from there. Enter your amount and the quote updates.
How do I figure out the bond amount? +
It’s one and a half times the vehicle’s value, with a $2,500 floor. The Wisconsin DMV reviews the documents you submit with your bond title application and confirms the value — check that figure before you buy.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the title bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
What does the bond protect against? +
It protects any prior owner or later purchaser who proves a superior ownership claim. If a valid claim is paid, you repay the surety — it is not insurance for you, it is a guarantee that backs your bonded title.
How long does the bond last? +
A Wisconsin title bond runs a 5-year term. If no valid claim is made, WisDOT removes the bonded brand at the end of the period and a clean certificate of title issues.
