About this bond

What the snowmobile title bond actually does

When you buy or inherit a snowmobile and the paperwork is missing, lost, or insufficient, Michigan lets you establish ownership with a bonded certificate of registration under MCL 324.82105. You post the Vehicle Uniform Surety Bond (TR-121), the Secretary of State issues the registration, and the bond protects anyone who later proves a superior claim.

The bond is in an amount equal to twice the value of the snowmobile as determined by the Secretary of State. It is conditioned to indemnify the Secretary of State, any prior owner, and any subsequent purchaser against expense, loss, or damage — including reasonable attorney fees — arising from issuing the registration or any defect in your title.

The bond runs three years. If a valid ownership claim is paid, you repay the surety — it is not insurance for you, it is a guarantee that backs your bonded registration. Note: Michigan generally does not require a bond for a snowmobile valued at $2,500 or less; if yours is below that, confirm with the Secretary of State before buying.

MCL 324.82105 (form TR-121)MCL 324.82105 lets an applicant who cannot present adequate proof of ownership obtain a Michigan snowmobile certificate of registration by filing the Vehicle Uniform Surety Bond (TR-121) in an amount equal to twice the snowmobile’s value as determined by the Secretary of State. The bond indemnifies the Secretary of State, prior owners, and subsequent purchasers, and remains in force for three years. A snowmobile valued at $2,500 or less generally does not require a bond — confirm with the Secretary of State.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Michigan snowmobile title bond?
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The bond amount is twice the snowmobile’s value, so smaller machines land at the $275 minimum and the premium scales up from there. Enter your amount and the quote updates.
How do I figure out the bond amount?
It is twice the snowmobile’s value as determined by the Secretary of State. Establish the value with the Secretary of State and double it — that figure goes on the Vehicle Uniform Surety Bond (TR-121).
Do I always need a bond?
No. Michigan generally does not require a bond for a snowmobile valued at $2,500 or less. If yours is below that threshold, confirm with the Secretary of State before purchasing a bond.
Is there a credit check?
No — the title bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
How long does the bond last?
A Michigan snowmobile title bond runs three years. If no valid ownership claim is made during that period, the bond requirement is satisfied.
