When you can't prove ownership of a vehicle, Michigan lets you get a bonded title — file a surety bond under MCL 257.217 (form TR-121) and the Secretary of State issues the title. We write it at a flat 3% with no credit check; the amount is twice the vehicle's value.

What the bonded title actually does

When you buy or inherit a vehicle and the paperwork is missing, lost, or defective, Michigan lets you establish ownership with a bonded title under MCL 257.217. You post a surety bond, the Secretary of State issues a certificate of title in your name, and the bond protects anyone who later proves a superior claim to the vehicle.

The Secretary of State requires a bond when it is not satisfied as to ownership of a vehicle worth more than $2,500 or less than 10 years old. The bond amount is two times the vehicle's current value, and it must be valid for at least three years from its date of issue.

The bond guarantees reimbursement of the Secretary of State, any prior owner, and any subsequent purchaser or lessee — including reasonable attorney's fees — against loss from the issuance of the bonded title. If a valid superior claim is paid, you repay the surety; it is not insurance for you. It is filed on form TR-121.

MCL 257.217 (form TR-121)MCL 257.217 lets the Secretary of State require a surety bond before issuing a certificate of title when it is not satisfied as to ownership of a vehicle worth over $2,500 or less than 10 years old. The bond, filed on form TR-121 (Vehicle Uniform Surety Bond), must equal twice the vehicle's current value, stay valid at least three years, and reimburse the Secretary of State, prior owners, and subsequent purchasers or lessees against loss.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Michigan title bond? +
The premium is a flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The bond amount is set at twice the vehicle's current value, so a $2,500 or $5,000 bond lands at the $275 minimum, and the premium scales up from there. Enter your amount and the quote updates.
When does Michigan require a bonded title? +
When the Secretary of State is not satisfied as to ownership of a vehicle worth more than $2,500 or less than 10 years old. Lower-value, older vehicles may not require a bond — confirm with the Secretary of State.
How do I figure out the bond amount? +
It's two times the vehicle's current value. Establish value with a recognized valuation guide or appraisal, then double it, and file the bond on form TR-121.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the title bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
How long does the bond last? +
A Michigan title bond must be valid for at least three years from its date of issue. If no valid claim is made, the title is no longer treated as bonded after the period ends.
