About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Louisiana regulates the intrastate transportation of household goods through the Louisiana Public Service Commission. Before moving household goods inside the state, a carrier must hold a common carrier certificate and file a $5,000 surety bond with the Commission.

The bond is one piece of the Commission's movers framework — which also requires cargo and workers' compensation insurance and a permanent Louisiana establishment. The surety bond runs to the Commission for the benefit of the public, standing behind the carrier's compliance with the household goods rules.

It is not insurance for you — if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety. The bond must stay on file as long as you hold the certificate; we track it and notify you 60 and 30 days out so your authority never lapses.

La. R.S. 45:164 (Public Service Commission)Intrastate household goods carriers in Louisiana are certificated by the Public Service Commission under La. R.S. 45:164 and the Commission's General Order governing household goods carriers, which require a $5,000 surety bond filed with the Commission before operations begin. The bond sits alongside cargo and workers' compensation insurance and a permanent in-state establishment. Confirm your filing requirements on your PSC application.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Louisiana household goods carrier bond? +
The premium is $275 — our minimum. The bond amount is fixed at $5,000, and 3% of that ($150) falls below our floor, so the price is $275, the same for every mover.
Do I pay the $5,000? +
No. You pay $275. The $5,000 is the surety's maximum liability to the Commission and the public — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Is this the only thing the PSC requires? +
No — the bond is one piece. The Public Service Commission also requires cargo insurance, workers' compensation insurance, and a permanent Louisiana establishment for intrastate household goods carriers. The bond is the part we issue.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the application has no credit section at all. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don't need one.
When does it renew? +
The bond must stay active for as long as you hold the certificate. You can buy a 1, 2, or 3-year term; we send renewal notices 60 and 30 days out, with autopay available.
