AL general contractor bonds.
Flat 3%. Enter your amount.

Alabama does not impose a single statewide contractor license bond on every contractor — but the Licensing Board for General Contractors can take a bond as financial assurance for a bid-limit classification, and many cities and counties require their own contractor bond. Whatever amount applies, we issue it at a flat 3%, $275 minimum, no credit check.

What the contractor bond actually covers

Alabama licenses general contractors through the Licensing Board for General Contractors under Code of Ala. Title 34, Chapter 8. Unlike some states, Alabama does not require a flat license bond from every contractor — qualification turns largely on experience and financial capacity.

Where a bond does come in is financial assurance: a licensee whose net worth or working capital falls short of the threshold for a desired bid-limit classification can post a surety bond to bridge the gap. The bond stands behind the contractor's performance and compliance for work within that bid limit.

Separately, many Alabama cities and counties require a local contractor license bond (often $5,000–$10,000) before they issue a business license or permits. We issue whichever bond applies — state bid-limit assurance or a local jurisdiction bond — at a flat 3% with no credit check. If you're not sure which you need, send us the requirement and we'll confirm.

Code of Ala. Title 34, Ch. 8 (Licensing Board for General Contractors)Alabama general contractors are licensed by the Licensing Board for General Contractors under Code of Alabama 1975, Title 34, Chapter 8. The Board does not require a uniform license bond from every contractor; a surety bond is used mainly as financial assurance to support a higher bid-limit classification when net worth or working capital is short. Many municipalities and counties separately require a local contractor bond. Confirm with the Board or your local jurisdiction which bond and amount apply.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Alabama contractor bond? +
A flat 3% of the bond amount, with a $275 minimum. The amount is set by the Board (for bid-limit assurance) or by your city/county — local contractor bonds commonly run $5,000–$10,000. Enter the figure and the quote updates.
Does every Alabama contractor need a license bond? +
No — and we won't tell you otherwise. The Licensing Board for General Contractors doesn't require a uniform bond from every contractor; a bond is used mainly as financial assurance for a higher bid limit, or where a local jurisdiction requires one. Confirm your specific requirement.
What is a bid-limit assurance bond? +
If your financial statement falls short of the net-worth or working-capital threshold for the bid-limit classification you want, you can post a surety bond to bridge the gap. It lets you qualify for the higher bid limit at licensing or renewal.
Is there a credit check? +
No — the contractor bond is issued with no credit pull. Larger bond amounts may get a quick soft-pull review, which never affects your credit score.
How do I know which bond I need? +
Ask the Licensing Board for General Contractors about bid-limit assurance, and your city or county about a local contractor bond. Send us the requirement and we'll issue the right one.
