About this bond

What it is and who needs it.

What the bond actually guarantees

Connecticut licenses auto businesses — dealers, repairers, and leasing companies — through the DMV under C.G.S. 14-52, and conditions a general repairer license on a surety bond. A general repairer is a shop authorized to perform a broad range of motor vehicle repair work.

The bond is a consumer-and-public-protection guarantee: it stands behind your honest dealing with customers and your compliance with Connecticut’s motor vehicle laws. If a repairer overcharges, performs unauthorized work, mishandles a customer’s vehicle or payment, or otherwise violates the law, the harmed party can recover against the bond. The bond is filed on DMV form K-158.

The amount is now $25,000 — Public Act 22-44 increased the repairer bond from $5,000 to $25,000 and removed the limited repairer’s license. It is a three-party arrangement among you (the principal), the surety, and the State of Connecticut (the obligee); if the surety pays a claim, you repay the surety.

C.G.S. 14-52 (form K-158)Connecticut General Statutes 14-52 governs new car dealer, used car dealer, and repairer licenses and the surety bonds the DMV requires. Public Act 22-44 amended 14-52(b) to increase the repairer surety bond from $5,000 to $25,000 and to remove the limited repairer’s license. The bond is filed on DMV form K-158 (Surety Bond — Motor Vehicle Dealer/Repairer/Recycler/Leasing). Confirm the amount on your DMV license paperwork.

FAQs

Common questions.

If yours isn't here, the bond team can usually answer within the hour.

How much is the Connecticut general repairer bond? +
The premium is $750 — a flat 3% of the fixed $25,000 bond amount, the same for every repairer. The $25,000 is set by statute, so there is no quote process.
Do I pay the $25,000? +
No. You pay $750. The $25,000 is the surety’s maximum liability if a valid claim is made against the bond — not a deposit, and nobody holds your money.
Why is the amount $25,000 now? +
Public Act 22-44 increased the Connecticut repairer surety bond from $5,000 to $25,000 and removed the separate limited repairer’s license. The general repairer bond is now $25,000, filed on DMV form K-158.
Is there a credit check? +
Not on this bond — the application has no credit section. Small fixed-amount license bonds like this one don’t need one.
How fast will I have it? +
License bonds like this are among the thousands of bond types that issue right after purchase — many shops finish the application and have the bond in the same sitting. At most, 1–2 business days.
